Bowman cemetery is in St. Clair Township, St. Clair County, Michigan on the north side of Yankee Road between Alan and 
Bowman Roads. This is an old family cemetery which was started by the Bowman-Chaffee-Justin families circa 1864. The 
cemetery is a pleasant tree covered traditional family cemetery and is in good condition, however, many tombstones have 
been damaged or deteriorated. The most recent burial is that of Emma (McCartney) Borntrager in 1954. The first burial 
appears to be that of Sarah (Hollenbeck) Justin in 1864. The oldest person buried in the cemetery is Polly (Chaffee) 
Justin-Bowman-Daniels born 1798 in the Mohawk Valley of New York. Polly was the matriarch of the Chaffee-Justin-Bowman 
clan.

The Bowman-Chaffee-Justin clan, settled on farms along what is now Bowman Road and Yankee Roads circa 1839.
A11 young men from the family; 4 Chaffee brothers, 2 Bowman brothers and 5 Justin brothers served in the Civil War, mostly 
in Battery, 1st Michigan Light Artillery, which Captain William Justin commanded. The battery was made up of mostly young
men from St. Clair Township. At least 9 Civil War Veterans are buried in Bowman Cemetery

I will be placing new bronze grave markers for all 9 Civil War veterans in the spring of 2006.
